Freedom Falls - Kennerdell, PA
Freedom Falls is one of the few waterfalls you'll see in my galleries that is not inside of an established park. This Kennerdell, PA landmark is both very easy and legal to access. You can find this waterfall just off of Rockland Station Rd with GPS coordinates for one of the parking spots at 41.23726618102224,-79.7478671247531.
You can park along the road in one of two pull-off areas, or you can drive all the way to the bottom of the hill and park in the lot on your left and then hike back up the hill. One benefit to parking at the bottom of the hill is that you can also check out the Rockland Tunnel (41.23173582041334,-79.7506143916952), which is only a short walk away.
From either of the pull off areas along Rockland Station Rd, just head down over the hill (there isn't an established path, but it's not that steep) until you get to Freedom Falls or Shull Run... you really can't miss it. Once you're down there, you'll find there is plenty of places to get a good vantage point of the falls - even from the stream itself if the water is low enough.
Once you're down there, you'll find there is plenty of places to get a good vantage point of the falls - even from the stream itself if the water is low enough. I've spent several hours there checking out the waterfall and the surrounding areas. While not terribly difficult to navigate, this is an at-your-own-risk area, as there are no safety improvements.
Despite not being an official park and having no signage, this is quite the popular spot. Expect to find quite a few other people if you've visiting on a weekend.
I feel that Freedom Falls, just like Springfield Falls and Hells Hollow Falls, looks its best when there is just enough to flow to cover it, but not a high amount of flow. It loses character when there is just a flood of water going over it. Even at extremely low flow, it still can look interesting.
While I've seen higher estimates, I'd say that this cascade is about 20 feet high and around 50 feet wide. It certainly is impressive when seen in person.
